Salmonella typhimurium will typically grow on BSA (Bismuth Sulphite agar) as dark colonies with a characteristic appearance. The colonies are often round, slightly raised, and have a glossy or shiny appearance. The black coloration of the colonies is a result of the reaction between hydrogen sulfide produced by Salmonella and the bismuth sulfite in the agar. This reaction is characteristic of Salmonella.
