Description

Whole Metagenomics — Shotgun Metagenomic Sequencing Explore the microbial composition and genetic potential of complex samples with Dextrose Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Our whole metagenomics service uses shotgun DNA sequencing to generate data for studying microbial communities and their collective genetic content. The workflow sequences DNA across the sample rather than focusing on a single marker region. The resulting data supports downstream microbial identification, taxonomic classification, gene prediction, and functional annotation. Service Overview Extracted sample DNA is used to prepare a sequencing library, followed by 2 × 150 bp paired-end sequencing using the Illumina HiSeq platform specified in our service catalogue. The catalogue specifies 25–30 million reads per sample, counted as R1 + R2. This dataset provides a foundation for investigating community composition and functional potential through an appropriate bioinformatics workflow. Applications • Gut and other host-associated microbiome research. • Soil and agricultural microbial community studies. • Water and environmental microbiome investigations. • Food-associated microbial community characterisation. • Industrial biotechnology and fermentation research. • Comparative studies across treatments, locations, or sampling conditions. • Investigation of microbial genes and metabolic functions. Sample Requirements • Sample type: Extracted DNA suitable for shotgun metagenomic library preparation. • Required DNA quantity: 200 ng per sample. The catalogue does not specify DNA concentration, submission volume, or purity thresholds. Confirm these acceptance criteria and transport conditions with our team before dispatch. Submission Information Clearly label each sample and provide sample identifiers, sample source, DNA extraction method, available quality assessment results, and study objectives. For comparative projects, include treatment groups, controls, biological replicate information, and relevant metadata. Indicate whether substantial host DNA is expected, as this can reduce the proportion of sequencing reads available for microbial analysis. Discuss low-input DNA, degraded samples, or samples containing potential inhibitors before submission. Sequencing Deliverables • DNA sequencing library preparation. • 2 × 150 bp paired-end sequencing using Illumina HiSeq. • 25–30 million reads per sample, counted as R1 + R2. This represents 25–30 million individual reads across R1 and R2, rather than 25–30 million read pairs. Confirm data delivery formats and transfer arrangements during project planning. Additional Bioinformatics Analysis The catalogue lists downstream bioinformatics as a separate service. Depending on the agreed package, this includes: • K-mer-based microbial identification. • Taxonomic classification. • Metagenome assembly, where included. • Gene prediction. • Functional annotation using COG and KEGG Orthology databases. • Visualisation of results using pie charts and Sankey plots. Confirm the selected analysis modules and output files before initiating the project. Interpretation Detection and taxonomic resolution depend on DNA extraction, sequencing depth, community complexity, and reference database coverage. Functional annotations describe genetic potential rather than measured gene expression or microbial activity. Turnaround Time Sequencing: 3–4 weeks. Bioinformatics analysis: Enquire for the applicable timeline. Service Coverage Based in Bengaluru, we support projects across India, including Kochi, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Chennai.
